Their logic (not thought-out, usually) is that in the socialist paradise we will all trust the state. Since we don’t have that, we can’t trust it at all - it’s just another branch of capitalism demanding money off us to move around.

When poor kids grow up seeing and hearing about people dodging annual tax bills more than their lifetime earnings or people making shed loads from unearned wealth, and some becoming obscenely rich or getting well ahead because of inherited wealth, then dodging fares seems like a small payback.

I mean a chunk of it is powered by a form of nihilism and you can absolutely understand where nihilism comes from considering the state of the world and considering the past few decades, but nihilism is toxic and the best that can happen is you damage your cause

I absolutely don't buy into the more utopian ideals of the left, but I think the internal logic is probably 'why should young people pay tube fare to line the pockets of *this* state; they will be very happy to do so to support our socialist paradise.'
