The thing about the online anti-bedtime left is they - allegedly? - believe in things that take huge societal buy-in, like action of climate change or a functioning welfare state or full communism or whatever and then they also seem to believe societal trust…doesn’t matter?

Their logic (not thought-out, usually) is that in the socialist paradise we will all trust the state. Since we don’t have that, we can’t trust it at all - it’s just another branch of capitalism demanding money off us to move around.

yeah this is well put, I'd not thought of it quite in that way but you're obviously right - weird belief in both "and soon the majority of people will work towards a beautiful, shared common goal" and "lmaoooo you expect someone to PAY for their own public transport? you fucking mug", which, huh

When poor kids grow up seeing and hearing about people dodging annual tax bills more than their lifetime earnings or people making shed loads from unearned wealth, and some becoming obscenely rich or getting well ahead because of inherited wealth, then dodging fares seems like a small payback.

I mean a chunk of it is powered by a form of nihilism and you can absolutely understand where nihilism comes from considering the state of the world and considering the past few decades, but nihilism is toxic and the best that can happen is you damage your cause

The fly tipping discourse almost ended me. People are literally harming the public space and you think it is wrong to punish them? Who are you Ayn Rand?

I absolutely don't buy into the more utopian ideals of the left, but I think the internal logic is probably 'why should young people pay tube fare to line the pockets of *this* state; they will be very happy to do so to support our socialist paradise.'

I think it's a lot simpler than that. It's a case of shoot the messenger, in this particular case.

Just been so depressing to see the Callaghan bit of the left back in power and then be so unable to articulate or enforce it's benefits
