It just baffles me how MCR ever got hit the scene band label because that was never their bag - scenesters were a culture that emerged from bands trying to *ape* what MCR and their contemporaries had going on.

Then there's a lot of The Cure, I think the influence of New Wave and foundational post hardcore were kind of the two biggest ingredients in the soup they first served.
With a fair bit of classic Gothic styled stuff like Echo & The Bunnymen thrown in to boot.

If you go back and listen to like, Screamo *foundation* artists back in the 80s like Moss Icon and Rites of Spring (whose vocalist would later join Fugazi) there's so many hints of that in early MCR. A lot off their first album has similar tones to Moss Icon.
