Pretty sure they did it just to mess with Adobe's bottom line, which is honestly a great move

It was a few months ago.

Their current marketing strategy is “the software itself is free but you can pay to unlock AI features”, which is… fine, since a lot of users just were never interested in the AI features anyway.

Given the choice, yeah, I'll take the company that's not trying to force GenAI on people. Disappointing that that's their perspective, though.

I guess that if that's their sales model this might be a time-limited thing (contingent on GenAI being seen as viable), so grab it while I can.
