I'm sure the re-nationalising it would be relatively straightforward but I don't understand where the money would then come from to fix it once in public hands.

Whats fucked up about water, is lots of the shareholders are actually public organisations either foreign (largest shareholder in Thames Water is Ontario pension fund) or ours (2nd largest shareholder is Universities Superannuation fund). Public organisations screwing other people over for money.
