A lot of people epically failed to accept the basic reality that the 2024 election was an election with huge moral stakes and a clear right and wrong answer (for a wide range of reasons). They now are twisting themselves into knots to protect themselves from accepting that moral failing.

The path to authoritarianism starts with "they're all corrupt," "they all lie to you," and "everything is a scam." It lets you pass off feeble-mindedness as sophistication and substitute objectivity for subjectivity. Liberal democracy requires that certain things be true and certain things be moral.

The big lesson of the last 50 years is that cynicism benefits authoritarians. As such, if liberals are ever able to regain power, we should prioritize restoring trust in institutions. The best way to do this is to mete out extremely harsh punishments against powerful people who abused this trust.
