A chronological list of posts, replies, and quotes/reposts from the accounts I follow?

That's exactly what I want to see, and it's why this is currently the only "social media" service I use. I don't think much machine learning or "AI" is required for that.

It's AI that stops most of the horrific content and spam that would otherwise be flooding the site

I get that (and not trying to be difficult). I think the disconnect comes from spam filtering algorithms ruining things only when they fail, while "engagement maximizing" algorithms ruin things when they succeed.

Without a mechanism actively showing me accounts I don't follow, I don't see the spam.
