I get that (and not trying to be difficult). I think the disconnect comes from spam filtering algorithms ruining things only when they fail, while "engagement maximizing" algorithms ruin things when they succeed.

Without a mechanism actively showing me accounts I don't follow, I don't see the spam.

I'm guessing my reaction (and others') is at least partly due to seeing what happens when platforms are tweaked to "optimize" what I see, versus showing me what I asked for while filtering out what I didn't.

People are wary because "better AI" doesn't usually mean "better spam filters" these days.
