At last we have created the Antipope from classic medieval polemic "Don't create the Antipope!"

Per Wikipedia, there are already at least half a dozen antipopes around the world. Most are from groups splintered from the Vatican for various reasons. Two are from the same splinter group, but disagree which one of them gets to be pope. Another believes he’ll become pope before the apocalypse.

We long for an American anti-pope though

The Avignon papacy was corrupt, so I can see the association with Trump.
Further, any schism requires the church to enact it. American Catholics love Pope Leo, and they would never tolerate Trump's interference. There will be no American Pope splitting with Rome to please the fat, orange apostate.

I hope Paolo Sorrentino gives us a third season of The Young / New Pope out of this.

When was the last politically motivated schism anyways? Henry VIII?

China has established official “patriotic” Catholic and Protestant churches that have a complicated relationship with less patriotic Christians elsewhere.

Technically all Schisms have been atleast partially if not majority politically motivated (You can't tell me what to do, you're in Rome and I'm in Istanbul/Russia/Britain)

But this would be the first Schism where it's 100% politically motivated

I mean I guess you can make an argument for Sedevacantism. Plenty of other princes split for political reasons, although they mainly jumped to existing churches. Last semi-serious attempt to raise an antipope was what, Felix V of Savoy?

The Old Catholic schism after 1870 was mostly about disagreements with Vatican I, but the Old Catholics in Germany got significant backing from Bismarck during the Kulturkampf. Not sure if that counts.

Northern v Southern Baptists over slavery in 1845? Certainly theological concerns, but very driven by politics of the age.

Maybe the 90s split of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship from the SBC? Again, theological concerns, this time over women, but also driven by politics.

Has there ever been a not politically motivated schism?

I would argue that all the falling out with regard to the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church would count, in spirit at least.

I suppose it depends where you draw the line between politics and theology? There’s been a minor schism in Mainline American Protestant denominations in the past decade or two over women bishops. That’s quasi-political.

I mean the global Orthodox community has essentially *just* had a political split because the Moscow Church is openly and firmly Putinist.

You could argue the Reformation at-large was as politically motivated as it was religiously, in fairness.

(Also counting all the post-Vatican II schisms would be cheating I guess.)

Where does this trend of American TradCaths trying to lecture the Pope come from? Did Biden summon Vatican diplomats to yell at them about gays or condoms?

I think it would be good if all the far right trad-cath psychos split off and just became yet another protestant denomination...
