Manual transmissions (in cars at least) don't have clutch packs in oil, its all bearings and gears. It is still recommended to change it, just not that frequently.

I still think there's a lot more action going on what with syncros and shift forks and stuff.

The only part of an EV drive unit which isn't permanently engaged is the parking pawl and some EVs don't even have those. They just automatically set the ebrake.

Those themselves aren't that much of an issue, and don't really contribute to wear unless there is operator error, because those parts are only sliding when power is interrupted (unless operator error, or intentional abuse such as no-lift-shifting).

And to your point about failures in Tesla:

Look, my long-time hatred of Tesla isn't simply because of Elon or the flashy decisions they make, it's also because I don't think their engineering is actually all that great! Their drive units have problems which other manufacturers are not having.
