According to her daughter, he was previously physically abusive towards her, they had split up and were now back together, they both became volatile when drinking.

I really hope whatever happened that she didn't suffer and it was an impulsive act rather than planned. I can't even imagine the emotional pain if she were alive when she went in and watched him motor away.
