His quote is concerning, and made me suspect that he hurt her.

"Further apart" means they already had distance between them, possibly emotional.

"We" rather than "I" continue to search is unexpected for a husband who has just lost his spouse. He's probably not doing much direct looking himself.

"That is my sole focus" rather than "this" is distancing language putting the search away from himself.

Also order equals priority, and he leads with how desperate he was to reach her, rather than what he saw happen or what she was doing. This just could be guilt, even if it were an accident, so to me, that's less conclusive.

This is incredibly sad.
