Kerry didn't truly excite people, and the swiftboating didn't help, but there were at least 46 electoral votes that could have easily swung the other way, and Kerry only came up 20 short. Ohio alone would have flipped it.

I think the reason he didn't do it is that while he *could* beat Schumer, it would be a serious uphill battle to get endorsements from elected Democrats in a primary against the Senate minority leader.
The fact that the hashtag resistance types vote for democrats and not republicans comes down to whichever campaign knocked on their door first in 2016. They have zero self awareness, and negative awareness of other people.
When they brought him back on Clone Wars like 15 years ago, I was pretty skeptical, but they managed to take a guy whose main thing was looking evil and then dying, and turn him into a real, fully developed character.
