I can't believe we have reached this point, but this bears crystal clear emphasis: Our global climate system ensures that even "limited" use of lower-yield "tactical" nuclear weapons against civilian or industrial targets would have major regional-to-global scale consequences.

And yet in their fear of rocking the boat, they've become powerless; the legislative branch of government has, under the leadership of Thune and Johnson, surrendered the power of the purse, the power to declare war, and most of its other powers, except when the Democratic minority prevails.

The war on Iran raises doubts that the Non-Proliferation Treaty can hold as a central pillar of international security, writes George Perkovich.

If it doesn't, will US-friendly countries seek nuclear weapons, and will China and Russia follow the US-Israeli example and forcibly try to stop them?

As I keep saying: Because no matter what abusers take from their victims, they don't want to take the blame. And one of the prerogatives of power is to be in charge of blame, and abusers routinely exercise that power to make their own acts someone else's fault.

"I don't want to happen but it probably will" is classic abuser language: "look what you made me do." Except it's not on the scale of a household, but of a nation of 90 million and millennia of civilization.....

Realizing that some of my inexplicable sadness about the Artemis II stuff is that it feels like a trans-dimensional communication from an America that took a different path and chose joy instead of fear and hate.

There is a path. It’s the path that Michael Vick walked. He has worked with the Humane Society for the last 17 years to educate folk about animal cruelty. He says he’ll do that work for the rest of his life.

Call me when Louis or Kanye devotes even one weekend to making reparation.

p.s. If you're not familiar with the phrase "sisterhood is powerful," it is a slogan from old-school feminism of the 1970s or 1980s. If you're not familiar with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, look them up and also they have chapters around the country and world.

I like the idea of turning Dolores Park (named after Dolores Street which in turn is named after Mission Dolores, founded around the corner from the park in 1776) into Dolores Huerta Park.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been a vital part of San Francisco's queer community, doing campy public actions and also good works, and I was endlessly honored and delighted to be canonized by them.

At the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. annual Hunky Jesus extravaganza in Dolores Park, the festivities began by canonizing three locals on the stage where the pageants would take place later. I was one of them and my saint name as you can read here, is Esperanzapedia.

"The present is different from the past, but that’s no use if you can’t remember the past. With feminism, the immensity of its achievements over the past 50 or 60 years disappears if you forget things used to be worse in ways almost unimaginable to those who didn’t live through them or study them."

The ruckuses (ruckii?) around Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, etc. came years before the Weinstein revelations of fall 2017. They're still coming. Maybe the NYT should read the NYT which just did a #metoo -ish expose on Cesar Chavez.

It's also super-tiresome the way people talk about #metoo as though it fell out of the sky or was born already grown up from Zeus's head. It was just another stage of a long process called feminism, notably the big surge of feminism that had begun some years beforehand.

The eager obituary writers tended to announce that #MeToo had failed whenever further incidents of high-profile sexual abuse were reported (though the very fact they were reported and in some cases successfully prosecuted may have been a result of these shifts).

A few weeks ago I wrote that everyone loves to write feminism's obituary. Then the NYT, of course, published ANOTHER obituary for it.

What will happen to the 82 USFS experimental forests around the country? Many sites have decades-long experiments that are tracking how forests are changed by timber harvesting practices and climate change. As I say here, “you can't just pick up an experimental forest site and move it to SLC.”

Great essay by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social "the very resistance by the political right to marriage equality as an equal right is because it demonstrates that marriage can be a freely negotiated relationship between equals, which threatens the patriarchial order."
