1: Sherman thought Grant was going to fire him and wanted to save face with that line since he lost handily, though his ordered retreat saved a lot of Union lives.

2: Grant some time earlier got word that reinforcements were arriving for the following day.

But how many men died on both sides as a result of that battle? And was the American public or the union public in support of the war?

Pittsburgh Landing, some 23,000. Yes, considering some 650,000+ died or were as wounded during the war, and they prosecuted the war to a successful conclusion.
