Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game. This week, the 1917 Huot Automatic Rifle, a conversion for (then) common Ross bolt rifles. It was chambered in .303 British, w/ 25 round springless magazines. French field trials showed they were reliable but hard to shoot. Few were made.

Reliable but hard to shoot. Sucks

Sucks like every bolt action conversion attempt. There's a pile of contemporary mechanisms that don't require you to start slapping crap on your bolt guns.

By the time you have gone through the R&D and manufacture of your conversions you could have already been making a purpose built self loader

Fucks immensely

That said, I don't want to try and use one. XD

Fucks. Looks very intimidating, interesting transitional tech.
It would make terrified for my trigger hand's thumb and wrist though, with the action extending right over it...

This... kinda sucks. The Ross was easy to shoot, but very unreliable. This was hard to shoot but more reliable. It's kinda cool, but they still tried to turn the worst battlefield rifle of the time into a BAR and i don't know how to feel about it

Fucks if you're in a static defence, which I'm reliably informed was a not insignificant part of WWI.

This gun fucks, and it fucks because its functional. Hard to shoot, but reliable is significantly better than a lot of other guns; additionally the design is beautiful and the round is respectable.

There's always a soft spot in my heart for a good kludge build, especially when it actually functions. Fucks.

That looks like a Jakobs gun from the Borderlands franchise.

Like all self-loading conversions for bolt actions, fucks severely.
I'd feel bad for any Canadian soldier that actually tried to use one though
Especially if it somehow made its way to the field

Alrighty on tonight's 'fucks or sucks' this thing weighs an ungodly 19 pounds loaded! This makes it heavier than the original 1918 BAR (15.98 pounds). This definitely locks in at a 'SUCKS' for me.

Crazy conversions of bolt action WW1 battle rifles into semi auto battle rifles and light machine guns always fuck. It's a rule of the universe. I didn't make it up. I'm just reporting it.

Interesting that this really did well in field testing and was about to enter production just as the war ended

Fucks, big time. I love these weird attempts to get more out of a bolt action (like the Pederson device)

Fucks but also the name sounds too much like "you wot" for me NOT to reflexively make this joke

Fucks. Probably on pure aesthetics and ballsiness, but it absolutely fucks. What a cool fucking thing.

With an added pistol grip in the rear and another in the front, in .303 British, it absolutely FUCKS. I’ll take two, please, mounted in tandem in the rear of my Toyota Tacoma technical.

Fucks.

One of my favorite guns in BF1
I use it for my "machine medic" build where I throw infinite smoke grenades and repair tanks all game and blast anyone that tries to come close and dynamite it

I'm sorry. I don't like it.

I think the Francophone nations produced a lot of wild and crazy weapons in that period and if any good came out of the process it would be the modified Belgian FN beloved by many of us who knew it as the SLR or the FAL.

It wasn't French built it's canadian built the French were just testing it it was built off of the rossi mk3 rifles after they were replaced in canadian service by the Lee endfield

Would fuck with a detachable box

The mags WERE detachable, but not a box they were the large scale rotating assembly you see above.

Fun fact, the mags themselves were fed by 25 round stripper clips.
