Yeah he was clearly influenced by Beeching but why destroy a massive infrastructural investment made by the British, just to copy the British? I am sure it's more complicated, but Andrews was the axeman, he was also brought in to bring RTE to heel but didn't manage to get Gay Byrne fired as planned.

For sure, I should read more deeply into it (I’m sure that someone must have written a book about it!), I am sure that there were various influences on it, from political to financial to lobbying (for and against). As I say, he did oversee modernisation as well as vandalism.

I think when you recall the govt almost voting to fill the Royal & Grand canals in for use as roads, or the massive motorway that would have annihilated large parts of D8 & D7 but ran out of $ (leaving only Bridgefoot St an orphaned freeway), it begins to fall into place a bit more clearly.
