I’ve been studying civil rights protests for 20 years. With new mobilization against Trump’s agenda, I’m sharing a thread summarizing my research on how nonviolent & violent actions by 1960s activists and police influenced media, elites, public opinion & voters. 1/ www.cambridge.org/core/journals/american-political-science-review/article/agenda-seeding-how-1960s-black-protests-moved-elites-public-opinion-and-voting/136610C8C040C3D92F041BB2EFC3034C

call me a liberal nationalist but I feel proud to export an American culture of space exploration, multicultural immigrant cuisine, the Black American music tradition, football basketball baseball, NY Jewish comedy, land grant universities, and social libertarianism

This month, Renee Good was killed in her car after stopping for immigrant neighbors.” www.nytimes.com/2026/01/28/opinion/trump-minneapolis-ice-protest.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XVA.2i7y.brT_zP8PKy5C&smid=url-share

Detroit will unveil a street sign Saturday honoring Viola Liuzzo, the white Detroit mother of five who was killed by Ku Klux Klan members in Alabama after responding to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to support the Selma voting rights movement in 1965.

There’s a paper trail and likely more to come: “CNN reviewed screenshots of dozens of messages Swalwell exchanged with the women, many of which are flirtatious in nature. None of the messages reviewed are sexually explicit. The women said Swalwell generally sent more graphic messages via Snapchat…”

If you’re speculating about the 2028 Democratic nominee right now, might I suggest you get a hobby. Or look up local volunteer opportunities. Something.

German paper finds broad, emotionally resonant but vague pro-democracy messaging (“empty signifiers”) can mobilize and unify mass public, but tends to stabilize democratic systems rather than transform, because internal disagreements arise among diverse factions. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11615-026-00659-5

Excellent. I literally just taught my US History survey class where I give them two halves of King's 1963 MOW speech (unattributed) and ask who they think gave the second speech.

<insert Pam from The Office meme: "they're the same speech">

Just published in Economica: using Mappiness plus granular crime data, @pankabencsik.bsky.social, @richarddickens.bsky.social and I show that violent crime causes increased stress to people living in the immediate vicinity over the following week. Open access. doi.org/10.1111/ecca.70037

Would rather be walking or cycling to work but currently need to commute by car and have rarely felt better about driving a 14 year old Prius V (and similarly wonder how people are *surprised* their gas guzzlers guzzle gas).

Really fun experience working on this paper with @owasow.bsky.social. When you think about it, it's just two Black and Jewish guys studying the effects of a Black and Jewish partnership to build 5,000 Black schools in the rural South on participation in the Civil Rights Movement
