Herald of the ever-expanding, all-consuming, telepathic technoblob. he/him

Worked the newsstand at a B&N in a past life and had to think for a moment about whether we carried that magazine.

Hot take: there's not actually a moral difference between bad that results from people with brains configured in such a way so as to meet diagnostic criteria for psychiatric conditions and bad that result from people with brains configured in such a way so as to make you go, "wow, that guy is evil."

For the life of me I'll never understand why people think Trump "doesn't care what people think." Yes, he's abrasive and offensive, but he is obsessed with image, obsessed with being thought of as strong, intelligent, powerful, winning.

I love DS9 and I love Garak but Andrew Robinson overacts there I said it.

Me: Yeah I waited several weeks until the symptoms became unbearable.

Mohan: Oh, no health insurance?

Me: No, I've got insurance. But I'd've had to put on pants.

King: You don't have to wear pants. We treat many patients wearing shorts.

Me: That's not what I...

Santos: He's an idiot.

Me: *nod*

Compasses point toward things. If yours wasn't pointing away from Trump and toward Harris, it wasn't working properly.

It's not about purchases. Phones are for scrolling. If I want to actually do something, I'm gonna use a real computer.

"Device hoarding" is not bad for "the economy"; it's bad for the industries producing those devices. If people have what they need and want, the economy--the distribution of scarce resources--is good! Thinking stuff has to be replaced is just broken window fallacy.

It's good to see the media finally acknowledging Gell-Mann Amnesia. Oh, wait, this is about AI, not news? Nevermind.

These two clauses aren't related, just both true.

Also a very rare win for Kant's categorical imperative, as evidenced by the myriad dunks providing examples where "but I'm just saying something morally correct so it's OK" is obviously not a rule anybody lives by.

Beautiful demonstration of speech act theory in the wild (derogatory). Big win for philosophy of language.

Really not a fan of the "war of choice" language being used to critique the Iran war. Barring a literal invasion of your homeland, every war is a choice to send soldiers off to go kill people. Maybe you think you have good reasons for doing so, but you're still making a choice.

The bluesky bubble: This whole time, I had assumed the reason I kept hearing about Abughazaleh was that she was somehow a shoe-in for the nomination and therefore necessarily relevant to the effort to retake the House. Up until a couple days ago I didn't even know she had opponents.

I have a planetary science joke, but it's not about Mars so you're probably never going to hear it.

"Whatever. You know she's going to vote for him a 4th time."

Yeah, probably, if she can't find a welcoming political home. Votes don't come with an asterisk. Take the goddamn win. I'd much prefer to live in a country full of bigots who vote not MAGA than bigots who vote MAGA.

As always, Trump's "sir" stories are fiction, but if I had to guess at what really happened, it's a combination of admirals attempting to explain to him why capturing ships in wartime is impractical and Trump picking up on Hegseth's very poorly concealed bloodlust.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Watched it on VHS/cable growing up, so it was my Robin Hood. Always gives me warm fuzzies now, even if I mostly watch for Alan Rickman's delicious scenery chewing, Morgan Freeman's exasperated amusement, and Michael McShane's bombastically lewd Friar Tuck.

What seems noteworthy about this video is how clearly it's aimed at Americans, not Iranians. Really can't imagine "oh they bombed us because of the Epstein files" is what the average Iranian is thinking.
