I hated Dickens at school — they took all the joy out of reading his work, but I came back as an adult with Our Mutual Friend, read it as I described, and absolutely fell in love with it.

That was my experience with every book we did at school. Education utterly killed my love of reading for years, and it’s why I’ve never gone back to tackle the classics.

I’m so glad my school didn’t teach 1984 because that’s one of my fave ever novels.
