I wouldn't say it's a bad book. It was my "inexperienced baby" first step into learning anything about Iranian society. But it misses on western action and abuse that Iran has suffered for decades. It suffers the Maus issue: decent works that are instrumentalized for an American agenda.

Maybe she forgot about this?

Recently (like a couple of years ago) she was offered the possibility to get knighted for her art in France.

She publicly refused saying essentially "I can't ignore France's hypocrisy regarding Iran, the country I was born in and that forged the other half of my identity"

Thanks for this. And thank you Marjane!

It was not Iran who attacked. EUA is worse. Much worse. Learn that,

The full 2005 interview it's from is well worth a read btw. Sadly just as relevant today as it was 20+ years ago—moreso, in fact. www.salon.com/2005/04/24/satrapi_2/

"There are many things I wish for my country . . . But if the USA attacked my country, no matter what, I would be against the US."

The majority of Iran is praising America, just this morning I saw an elderly woman saying that America has given Iran a martyr. I guess she feels like a MAGA member if trump was assassinated, she said they will "tear apart limb by limb" those responsible for their religious leader's death. MAGA Cult

The point of democracy is supposed to be that it pursues the will of the people. When the leadership begins to pursue its own agenda, based on retaining power, democracy calls for it to be replaced.

Excellent way to put it.

And what of all those hundreds of protesters that were brutally murdered for speaking their minds about an ACTUAL radical and extremist government? What about the Iranian citizens that even now cannot say certain things to the outside world out of fear of endangering themselves and their loved ones?

you should read Persepolis if you want to know her feelings on that.

I think about this moment portrayed in Persepolis every time a new crime against humanity is committed by Israel or the US. It makes me remember this isn't some vague, inscrutable conflict that would happen no matter what, so who cares! Its real and I weep for my brothers and sisters who are killed

You... are missing the point of her quote quite literally. Iran has CONTINUALLY committed cimes against humanity. The gov spent the last month + slaughtering 10s of thousands of Iranians for protesting. ALL of these leaders are horrific. All of the PEOPLE just want to live & not be bombed

I remember interviewing her in the late 00s, and she talked about feeling compelled, even as someone exiled by the regime, to fight for her people and country if another country were to attack it.

Currently reading. Bought Persepolis before this all started. There's so much that Americans don't know or care to know about a people they claim to hate.
