Correct - TISZA would need a 6% lead in popular vote to draw level.

But Magyar has been very clever by visiting tons of rural seats - real granularity to get rural votes.

Really great piece & thanks for the shoutout! Highlighting the importance of the Druzhba pipeline in Orbán’s thinking/campaign is spot on. He seems closely attuned to the current global focus on energy chokepoints.

But in all this geopolitical strategizing, I think voters have just lost the plot.

Thanks so much for this article. Some information I knew, via visiting and teaching in Serbia and witnessing his rise to power, and listening to friends who had Hungarian friends lamenting over it.

What really struck me, though, was the EU freezing €6.3 billion in funds in 2022, changing the tide.👍

My simple questions are:
1: just how corrupt is Orban? - ie are we likely to see ballot stuffing / gangs intimidating voters / ballot boxes going missing etc.
2: When he loses will he do a trump and try and declare a state of emergency etc in order to cling onto power?

For 2, Orban will absolutely try to cling to power, but how effective he will be will depend on how big of a loss he suffers. If Magyar wins by a simple margin, Hungary will be in for a tough time as Orban contests the results and Magyar is stuck politically impotent until Orban returns to power

Great news for liberal, democratic Poland, too, which was another acolyte of Orbán under their PiS governments but is now led by one of Europe’s foremost statesmen, premier Donald Tusk. They are burdened with a fascist president right now, Nawrocki, but he’ll be neutralized and isolated.
