Zero reason to think the Russian nuclear arsenal is in as bad shape as the conventional side. Sorry. It's a common belief but it is not based in reality.

This argument always stood out to me weird - I thought it was well understood that *that* is directly where they are funneling the prime chunk of their money and resources into?

People who think that the full russian nuclear arsenal is fully ready to go aren't sane.
On the other side, they still probably have over 1k working warheads, what is still enough for nuclear armagendon.
But there is much more to maintain, what is ver costly

Actually, there are plenty of reasons. E.g. the way less (like really uncomparably less) money spent on maintenance than in the USA.

One honest question: nukes can only ever really be used for MAD silliness.

If no one is looking, and you know all your assignment will do is at best get revenge and at worst mean you caused the apocslypse...

Why...not just sell out from under? They can't report it (see Yes Prime Minister ep 1)

This presupposes that nobody is looking. Why would you think that nobody is looking (both from your own government and foreign governments)?

I would distinguish between physics packages (unknown) and delivery (after shitting the bed on Bulava, etc, for a bit, RU arguably has a more modern selection than US)

Like in a no-test world I think US holds an advantage based on data, computing, and capabilities like DAHRT, but JFC the ways of delivering those items has decayed

You can make that distinction but holistically, it looks like the arsenal works
