Robin DeLorenzo's gender discrimination lawsuit against the NFL isn't the 1st time a female referee has sued a pro league. The NBA was sued 30 years ago for gender discrimination after not hiring referee Sandra Ortiz-Del Valle.

Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav defeat a securities fraud lawsuit stemming from WBD’s media rights negotiations with the NBA.

Zaslav was accused of misleading investors, but a federal judge disagreed, saying at worst he engaged in "puffery.”

Federal judge dismisses lawsuit that threatened to end legalized sports betting in Washington D.C., and the lawsuit was based on D.C.'s version of the Statute of Anne—named after Queen Anne of Great Britain from the 1700s & allows non-bettors to sue winners of bets. My @sportico.bsky.social column:

If you're going to sue a trading card company over an alleged scheme to raise prices, you have to actually buy a card to show you were harmed, and thus have standing to sue.

Judge dismisses lawsuit against Fanatics by would-be, but not actual, card buyers, my @sportico.bsky.social column:

No country for old scouts?

A federal judge dismisses an age discrimination lawsuit brought by 35 former MLB scouts between the ages of 54 and 86.

The rise of Moneyball, analytics and, nowadays, AI might have hurt their careers but not in an illegal way, the judge rules.

It was an honor to join @deankronkwarner.bsky.social on the Big 12 Law Deans' virtual collegiate sports law CLE. There is so much to discuss these days in sports law, especially college sports.

Man…when I was coming up as an investigative reporter at Fortune, the writing and editing process was grueling (and rewarding!). What an embarrassment this is for a brand that meant so much to us.

I'm going to come back to this paragraph from today's @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social newsletter today often. Puts into words what I feel every time I hear about someone asking AI to make every random decision for them. Just try it out! That's what being a human is for!

Powerful column by Paul MacDonald, lead counsel for athletes in Johnson v. NCAA. Paul explains why even if Congress passes, and President signs, legislation to reform college sports, it will be immediately challenged in court—so more lawsuits, not less. This is often overlooked in media coverage IMO.

The legal battle between the NCAA and DraftKings Inc. over “March Madness” trademarks is escalating and hints at a larger dispute over the growth of sports betting in America.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips weighs in on UVA quarterback Chandler Morris’ lawsuit against the NCAA to play a 7th season, and he supports the NCAA’s position. An interesting turn in the litigation, with UVA being an ACC member school.

The House passes the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act, which has bipartisan support (30-4 vote in committee) and would reshape boxing in America.

Interesting how Congress can pass a sports law, just so long as it doesn't involve college sports.

Is sports betting—especially microbetting & in-play betting on apps—addictive in ways the law should deem illegal?

That's the question in a new lawsuit, Sage & Thompson v. DraftKings et al., filed today.

It could be a major test of the industry.

It was a blast to join Harvard Law School Professor Leah Plunkett for a terrific discussion today at the HLS Berkman Klein Center on legal issues around youth influencers in athletics, entertainment, and homes. We talked about the Coogan Law, NIL and the compensation and protection of young talent.
