Man…when I was coming up as an investigative reporter at Fortune, the writing and editing process was grueling (and rewarding!). What an embarrassment this is for a brand that meant so much to us.

This isn't a journalist who deserves a journalist's salary. This is an entry level editor that works for the computer, who is hallucinating its journalism.

I’m reading “a journalist’s salary” like that’s a large number. I’m also laughing about that. Bro at least doesn’t deserve free pizza.

So he copy edits for AI and isn't a writer.

While AI has excellent applications in analyzing large data sets, to use it to replace original content by humans is an excuse to disregard the humanity within journalism and other media content. So far the US Copyright Office is holding that rights require a significant original human contribution.

Eventually people will start sniffing out real news. I think we are closer to that point than it seems.

My UGA journalism professor would’ve run out of red ink had he discovered me using AI to write something. I’m damn good because he was way too damn good. I’m sure loads of people who had great teachers that refused to let us be meh.

Fortune's been a joke for YEARS. This is not a surprise.

It’s all so dystopian and depressingly stupid.

As a professional in a niche industry I can say that even with amazing tools like Claude; the AI agent needs constant supervision to remain on track. I have caught multiple instances of creating fake data, fake citations, and entire sections of a document that are untethered from reality.

I joined shortly after you left and even though Alan Murray was cranking up the aggregation machine, we were still taking pride in our original reporting all the way up until I left (shortly after Cliff) in 21. This is an abandonment of all that was great about Fortune.

He should have asked AI if this pose made him look cool.

Yeah this isn’t journalism and he’s not a journalist. Also according to the courts this work isn’t copyright protected b/c it wasn’t created by a human. How is that in Fortune Magazines best interest and why would people knowingly buy that type of content anyways?

Isn't Fortune all paid articles now? Maybe that's Forbes.

This could go one of two ways:

Journalism is killed by AI.
Or.
Real Journalists become even more valuable

I didn't know you were at Fortune! I'm a publicist, so you're probably in one of my old media lists :). A lot of media is pushing back big time on AI content, so I really don't think it's going to go where people think. I get STERN warnings from media about submitting AI content. They check it too.

Remember Sports Illustrated and some others (Engadget I think) owned by the same parent got smacked down a couple years ago for AI articles with fake author profiles. But I think some large brands are going to have to get exposed for the backlash to be felt. Just my two cents.

Especially in a day and age that desperately needs good journalism.

There are so many parallels with our present time and the gilded age. We desperately need our own Ida Tarbell.

So basically these writers are posting made up stories because they are too lazy to actually write and edit.

What’s crazy is all they would have to do is read good writers and copy some tactics.

I think it is abuse of the noble word writes to describe plugging an headline into an AI and then editting the slop it craps out.

There's a simple work around. Don't read the corporate media sites. Ignore it. For this to work there needs to be a second tier of trusted journalists who can fact-check and interpret the AI slop. That's where folks like you come in, Mina #rejectAI #resistAI

This is the future. The goal of corporations is to eliminate jobs because people are the biggest detriment to the bottom line.

Companies exist solely to return profits to shareholders.

Well this makes my day. For those of us who bust our asses to make deadlines, and in the journalism world they can be in minutes and seconds, this is infuriating. Just throw some buzz words into the computer and you have yourself a piece of work.

They are not mortified. It was a conscious decision to make him, as Fortune writes, “ . . . responsible for reporting and editing a mix of breaking news and digital features. This includes stories developed with the assistance of artificial intelligence.” Firing all the copy editors saves money.
