if a position of authority can be misused in this way, that position of authority should not exist. It's clearly not enough to simply change who is in that position, no more than praying that the next king be better than the last.

I keep thinking tgat if Trump is replaced or dies who replaces him? Vance? Probably worse in every way. I agree Trump needs to be removed from office but there is no clear alternative that would make things better waiting to step on IMO.

Vance doesn't have the electoral pull that the GOP thinks Trump has. He'll still have sycophants but politically, no one is going to be scared of going against him. The post-Trump feeding frenzy in the GOP will be unrivaled in modern history.

People always forget that the great boon of democracy is not the ability of choosing good leaders, but that of easily deposing bad ones (without having to kill anyone).

The more difficult it is to change leaders without ending the regime the less democracy there is.

In theory America was evolved to avoid this exact thing based on checks and balances that have been undone over the last decades at the same time ecological protections were removed and we learned the lesson in the last century wars too but it’s a never ending battle to change structures. How?
