the only thing I’ll add to this, which is an extremely valid feeling, is that I still don’t think Americans (I’ll include myself here) have any real idea the scope and scale of the destruction we have wrought on the rest of the world. Just incomprehensible the scale of the evil we unleashed

As an American I feel like this should be easy to grasp and it baffles me that so many are in denial and plug their ears.

the majority of americans are also (historically) so far removed from national politics that they have no idea what's actually happening at any given moment. look at cuba rn ffs.

I do my best to know as much as I can and I still can’t, you’ll just be reading thru a random book and learn USAID sterilized 300,000 indigenous women in Peru in the early 90s that’s outside of any major foreign policy discourse at the time or now

When I try to talk about domestic and international concerns wrt Indigeneity, most normie Americans I know just become literally stunlocked. The contradictions with their perceived identity as “American” and what that actually means are unable to be confronted or acknowledged.

The sheer scale of our violence is difficult to comprehend.

Another American here and I agree
As a society, we're way too insulated from the rest of the world and we're way too comfortable being able to just externalize the horrors we commit. We often seem to be a nation perpetually gazing at our own navel.

Not that it helps how those people feel, cause they're right, but the US pop. lets the govt murder them & their children too. Growing up in an oppressive, broken society makes it seem normal & empathy for anyone else becomes harder. Fuck, some people here legit take pride in their own suffering.

that is the fucking WORST PART of this too. we all recognize the us govt is evil and the us people should hate your govt as much as the rest of the world does and yet SO many choose to blame us for it. im not a saint! i cant handle having empathy for usians while they dehumanize me!
