Anyone just going out there and running (easy pace) through the polar vortex cold? If so, what the hell do you wear?

Oh, yes: let’s talk about THIS.

Layers! Lots of ‘em! For coldest weather, I wear shirt, pullover and jacket, thick gloves over thin ones, a gaiter around neck/face, hat, and thickest leggings I’ve got (some wear shorts over that.) Lot depends on how, and how much you tend to heat up.

Three thinner layers insulate better than one thick one, plus can be removed/unzipped if (believe it or not!) you start to overheat. And while I love me some race swag, for really cold weather I use gear I paid for: it’s tighter to the skin so you want good feel, fit and flexibility.

I don't run, but I walk about 4 miles per day. I wear long underwear under jeans, ankle-high, flexible boots and wool socks, a turtleneck, cashmere sweater and hoodie, and a long puffer jacket. And a wool hat and mittens (not gloves). IMO the long underwear and sweater are key.

Turtleneck sweater. hoodie, and puffer coat? Yah, that'll keep you warm on a walk. Do you ever get 2 miles in and feel overheated? Ever shed layers? A friend I used to hike with would shed under layers as we hiked. Stop time for her to pull sweater. Then stop for her to pull hoodie.
