About when did mushrooms evolve?

Interesting question! The first fungi evolved around 800mil years ago, but the first wood decomposers like these were more like 300mil years ago

lichens. they are fungi, but they are NOT "mushrooms".
1

3
They are mushrooms ๐Ÿ™Œ fun fact, a mushroom is any fleshy spore-producing part of a fungus, it doesnโ€™t need a cap or stem or gills or anything

Lichens specifically grow symbiotically with algae as a complex form of life, these mushrooms here have no algae involved

Beautiful patterns that one often sees on book papers in leather bound copies from the 19th and early 20th centuries. My copies of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Wind in the Willows have them. Every one should read whatโ€™s between the covers of these two books.

Trรกmeles versicolor, or, according to the new Audubon mushroom guide, the "Turkey Tail". (This new guide seems obsessed with finding โ€“โ€“ or inventing โ€“โ€“ common names for mushrooms.) It is indeed a pretty little fungus. I used to try growing it in my garden!

They are fungi but *technically* (๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ‘†) a mushroom is the part of any fungi that produces spores and is fleshy (as-in not threadlike hyphae) and they donโ€™t need a cap or stem or anything!
