That's a Hemingway derivative story!
Once over a dinner (and drinks...), he was challenged to write a short sad story in the fewest words possible right then and there. And he did:
"For sale: baby shoes. Never worn."

I see that as a challenge to come up with reasons why the shoes were never worn: they were too small for the baby; the baby already had enough shoes and didn't need them; the shoes fell down the back of the chest of drawers only to resurface after baby had outgrown them... and so on, and so forth
