Anyone else getting a lot of REALLY old videos recommended on YouTube lately? Like 10+ years old…

Also seeing notable spikes in activity on my own videos that are around that old, so I’m figuring others are getting this as well.

Yeah, sometimes in my recommendations I get two rows of 10+ years old videos and it's usually completely random stuff. It is nice to see to be honest.

I've been getting a lot of years-old Techmoan videos recommended, most of which I have seen. I don't mind that!

It's been a long trend of youtube suddenly recommending older videos to people out of nowhere. 10, 19 years later. Idk they do it, but I think that's what's happening

Funny you mention that, I got your “IBM PS/2 Computer Motherlode” video recommended just yesterday! 🤔

because google doesn't have to share revenue with ancient videos

I have been getting tonnes of 9 - 11 year old videos recommended. I think YouTube is desperate to keep me engaged, but since I tend not to like things outside my favourites, and they don't have new content, it's delving into the back catalogue.

I can confirm that I watched a few vintage PC and console reviews from your VHS era the other week.

Yeah, there seemed to be a fluke with YouTube's recommendations a couple weeks ago where really old stuff was suddenly appearing.

It also seems that they've lost track of my views older than 6 or 7 years, so I'm seeing a lot of 7-year-old videos on my main page

Something about their current recommendation algorithm seems time-dependent, too -- if I watch one old thing, other popular or related videos from around the same time pop up

10+ years old? Son, I'm getting 20 year old videos in this house.

Yep, the occasional time I check the home page, I find I'm getting a lot of old videos recommended and also videos from small channels, the latter of which I actually appreciate.

Yeah I’m getting more from smaller channels as well, that’s been nice!

I get this every few months randomly. YouTube will just feed me tons of 10-15 year old videos, most I have already watched. It will last for awhile and then go back to normal after a week or two.

Algo doesn't want people to accidentally see current events?

No, but I do sometimes binge your old Sims 3 videos still if I need a good laugh.

My girlfriend got really into watching the Thrifts videos from the beginning.

On any established channel as a logged out user when I watch the most recent video the next video suggested is usually from the channel and a minimum of a year old.

Example: I just watched your new Halikan video then YT sent $4,750 Laptop From 1997: HP OmniBook 800CT from 2 years ago.

Fingers crossed they start recommending 18 year old videos and I’ll really clean up!

I've got a lot of 10+ year old videos recommended the past months, but literally now when im checking youtube all the top 15 videos were uploaded the past 48 hours

Yeah. It comes in waves too, every video in my recommended earlier was at least 10 years old

On the bright side a whole new generation are about to learn too much about CED players from @techconnectify.bsky.social, not to mention how to build a woodgrain PC.

All of the Techmoan videos on various obsolete media formats too!

Yes. Lots of 10-15+ year old videos or new videos with very low view counts. The latter is probably good for smaller creators but I have no idea what's up with the former.

Yep. A TON of your older videos keep popping up in my auto play

I am seeing more and more videos that are 4+ years old being recommended, yes.
All the recommendations are for channels that I am subscribed to, too.

From time to time i get the need for speed videos, those were you talk about some videogame, the box arts and best/worst in each year. And i always go watch. Those and the thrifts from start to finish.

yup, even more now that youtube scrapped the date on the search, which means that after 7 or 9 results you'll start to see recomended videos instead of your search ;_; But yeah, a lot of 5+ years videos being recommended right now

Algorithm randomly decides to push old vids at random I guess, gives people a bit of a nostalgia hit :P

That's funny because I actually was just recently rewatching all your old Thrifts videos.

My recommendations are full of 10-15 year old videos, so yeah, it feels like they're pushing older videos.

Recommendations feed on the YT main page has been showing lots of 3 - 10 year old videos lately across channels I'm subbed to.

Not me. Mostly new stuff recommended, few year old, and very few many years old. No more than usually.

Yeah I've noticed this a bit too. Not that I mind one bit, theres a lot of fantastic older content out there. And like, 10 years ago is already starting to be solidly 1080p territory for a lot of channels too. Holds up increasingly well.

see google didn’t think to store the year as more than one digit, so

Hey Clint, Just wondering if you saw the new Star Trek Voyager game that is out on steam? I'm enjoying the demo and would love your thoughts on it or if maybe you would be interested in reviewing it.

Honestly, I'm caught up with the current stuff so I'm always happy to have more stuff to play while cooking but at the same time YouTube has forgotten that I've always watched most of the back catalog so I'll see something pop up that says I haven't watched and I'll think "pretty sure I have..."

I had a video that I remember favoriting 15 years ago appearing in my recommended on Friday:

"The Hero" by Nostalgia. Music really helped me through some trying times.

Earlier today my autoplay pulled up the "$3,000 laptop" video from 12 days ago, then "Apple II on a PC Card" from 2 years ago, and then "LGR Oddware - Creative 3D0 blaster" from 5 years ago. I was busy working in the other room, so I just let them play. Every now and then, it just does this.

It's been doing that to me for a while, but with music channels I have no interest in. Nothing related to what I actually like to watch. :(

Been noticing this since December for me, YouTube main page has been recommending older videos from some of my oldest subscriptions

mine's mostly been fresh content and new to me creators that i actually end up liking quite a bit, which is weird on its own. when i get hit with super old stuff it's usually closer to the 16 year old range and some Classic Youtube content. got hit with Daft Hands last week.

I got recommended a video lately I probably had in my history at the very start of my Google+ account about 15 years ago. Not complaining but... huh?

Somehow 2 days ago youtube recommended me a "Super Dave" sketch from some 1980s canadian tv show. The other 30 episodes I watched were probably my own fault.
