The time between fossil fuel crises is just going to keep shrinking, until there's no discrete single "crisis" - just one unbroken prolonged state of global suffering due to fossil fuel unreliability

The best time to ditch fossil fuels was 30 years ago. The second best time is now

The first time was over 50 years ago after the first oil crisis. Since then the #fossilmafia worked successfully to protect their dirty businesses

Not sure anyone knows if it's Actually Over or not but surely this is a best case scenario for the fossil fuel companies

They get 3 to 4 quarters of blood profits and "emergency" gov't subsidies, and everyone else suffers through crippling fossil fuel prices

Tru, but fact is we need crippling fossil prices. That's the quickest fix for how deep in this heating hole we've reached.

Aren’t most of the “emergency” government subsidies on the consumer side — e.g., excise-tax reductions or holidays? What new ones are directly going to fossil fuel companies?

Oh they'll extract every taxpayer cent to decommission and rehab the infrastructure they were told NOT to create.

They also increase their profits long term. The fee becomes part of the 'cost' and then the % profit margin applies to it.

Then they apply the same price to all the oil that never went anywhere near the Strait

That, and the little matter we're increasingly being told we can't mention...

A climate that's rapidly becoming incompatible with 'civilisation' in its current form.

The amount of new solar added last year was more than the previous 4 years combined.
There is hope. I know a LOT of solar projects have happened in my part of Wisconsin and are offsetting more and more fossil fuel reliance.

Certainly this should remind everyone that arguments favouring fossil fuels based on their supposed superior reliability over renewables are specious.

They somehow both become dumber

It was generally agreed that untapped oil deposits like in the tar sands in Canada or trapped in American rock layers were so hard to harvest that it would cause unacceptable damage to the environment. Then they did it anyway

And it is happening for a lot of countries as well … this was the best advert you could ever had for renewable
