Something I’ve picked up on in many years of reading statements of denial from people accused of sexual violence is that they often focus more on whether the victim is believable than whether the events occurred. Because those details tend to corroborate the allegations. So they attack credibility.

Always been that way. Accuse the victims of “dressing sexy” or some other STUPID thing instead of admitting they’re WEAK, PATHETIC DEVIANTS!

United States, nearly three women are killed by an intimate partner or family member every day. Over 55% of all female homicide victims in the U.S. are killed by current or former partners, with roughly 92% of female victims knowing their killers.

Trial that ended this week in Canada
Will be waiting to see what the sentencing will be
At this point in time I have concerns that as usual the sentencing will be minimal
What is galling about this case, is that some charges were dropped as victim died before trial

I would guess each victim has a similar story of "aftershocks" as I call them, behaviors they now have because of the abuse.

that's a really key point - it's a way to shift the burden from the perpetrator to the victim, and it's a total cop-out

They're also very much aware that society desires a perfect victim and often demonizes or disregards abuse victims even if such a person is a family member. There should be no other greater evidence of why you should never allow your children to sleep over anywhere, and that includes at family.

Generations of women have known this which is why sexual violence flourishes.
Having one's credibility impeached after a sexual assault retraumatizes victims seeking justice.
Victims are reinforced to stay silent.

It's what all the slimey lawyers do in court. And slimey Senators too. It's unbelievable that we have Thomas and Kavanaugh on the highest court of the most powerful nation in the world. We are a disgrace.

The problem for Trump is, there are many, many corroborating witnesses.

People accused of sexual violence will say "that did not happen."

Then the sexual abuser uses the DARVO technique to deny, attack and manipulate to avoid accountability until the victim is the offender and the offender is the victim.

I agree, but at the same time, we now live in a time when people will lie to ruin someone for political reasons. While we should always give victims the benefit of the doubt, there should be room to check the credibilty of their complaints.

men are always given the benefit of the doubt. he said/she said - her word is always devalued.

not a surprise when our legal system is developed by and run for the benefit of men.

systemic misogyny.

Yes, though there have been false allegations brought in rare cases, they were typically easily disproved. We seem to trust the words of children more than adult women in these types of cases.

When William Reece was finally identified as the man who raped and murdered at least 4 women, he admitted the murders but had a really good reason each woman deserved it.

Predators know the script... present women as crazy, unreliable narrators who either drank too much, were seductive or just slutty. He said, she said often works because women are looked at as deceptive and manipulative. What is the worst is when other women believe that narrative.

It’s easier to attack the victim than the violence. So it becomes—Why come forward now? How do we know we can trust them? What if they are like previous people we disbelieved before? Instead of—Did this event happen? Were they in the same place at the same time? Who else knows? What did they say?

If you read the articles and listen to the testimony of the victims and the witnesses and people they told, you’ll typically get the answers to all of these questions—and they’re usually favorable to the victim, too! But the societal script around allegations is to question IF we believe the victim.

Anyone who has studied trauma at all knows that it can be many years before people are ready to process it. All the more so in cases like this where they know they will be treated like shit in this misogynistic society.

We have been siting with a convicted felon and a adjudicated rapist and yall have been fine with that. It may be true however the fact that you now feel so triggered by this event but saw fit to vote for a nasty felon wanna be mob boss is astounding. The Epstein survivors would like a word.

All this trauma dumping is just outrageous. Trump and his friends have been at it for years and yet they all fail up. Countless black athlete and stars may have been guilty but never have they been given the benefit of the doubt or thought of with such reverence. Explain it to your therapist.

Mostly because I've served as a jury member on several trials involving sexual assault, I've learned that I am not going to judge anyone until an actual jury is formed and a criminal or civil suit is complete.

And yet somehow that's always interpreted among a great many people as a negative thing.

The reason they do so is because victim credibility is often what gets these scumbags off the hook. Children are rarely seen as credible. Women of course are also seen as less than credible, particularly in the absence of physical evidence.

Character assassination. It’s a known defense strategy. Knew a kid who grew weed and some trimmers stole from him. Him and a few buddies went to the apartment the trimmers lived and they tried to pull some gangster shit. The witness that put him on scene was attacked on stand. The kid’s dad was a….

If you can't win on evidence, you win casting doubt on your opponent (or, well, victim, in this case).

People act like these statements don't get filtered through a lawyer, at least, PR rep, etc., but they always do.

They have campaign reps, a whole team, dedicated to spinning shit.

I used to assess men convicted of family and domestic violence for eligibility to participate in a structured program (Duluth model).
Almost without exception - these men tried to discredit and blame their victims.
