The article says that this is due to a lack of supply of transformers and other electrical systems needed to build these data centers. Boycotts can be effective and we should exercise that muscle of collective action but it doesn't seem like it was the deciding factor here.

Well for example my GPU is no longer getting any driver updates (close source binary blobs) after only 10 years and its not even that expensive. Jetson lost support after like no-time at all. Good luck with these 40k GPU's that not going to make it more then 6 years max. 🤐

By the time they need to replace them they better have made enough money already. (includes investments for building the datacenter, people running it and rising energy costs)

The people getting fired over AI are not the ones that are going to be paying to use it so who is paying?
