I think lots of people, especially in the past, see their children as property. These children are berated, threatened, and beaten into conforming. As adults (or older kids) who went through this, when they see people not conforming, it is upsetting & confusing. "Why do they get to be different?!"

My parents *knew people* that thing was done to. It's literally not terribly long ago it was acceptable to mistreat your children. (And certain parental groups want to bring it back under the guise of "it's just spankings".)

Fear of getting spanked never worked for me.

... no, I was more scared of getting a look... then a sigh... and then: "Your mother and I are so disappointed in you." That cut me deeper than a belt could ever.

@Kereminde, I was totally thinking about left-handed individuals when I wrote my original response. I also think about my poor classmates who obviously had ADHD or Autism. Many parents were not kind to their kids for "acting out."
