We did use "the Lou" to refer to USS St. Louis (LKA-116) in the early 1990s.

I think it’s part of some city-wide branding/tourism initiative that started a few years ago. Around the same time the Cardinals started wearing those jerseys, I began hearing it in radio commercials and stuff too. Haven’t lived in STL for a while, but I’m sure everyone there hates it
