I enjoyed figuring out how a short little Kithkin armorer would feasibly go about shoeing a Choco…giant bird mount, but after noodling around with some different engineering solutions, I ultimately landed on “bonded trust” for the sake of a less cluttered composition.
While the story being told here is kind of cozy/provincial, I kept the color palette a bit more neutralized than usual to keep it feeling earthy and old-world.
The direction I was given for this set was to lean into a lot of visual and tactile natural textures, so it was a fun opportunity to get chunky with the paints and painting surface to achieve some of that look.
It's not super apparent from this angle, but the idea is that this little guy is a scrap collector and smelter all in one cute little walking robot package.
I remember when I first played FFXII back in the day, it was one of the first games I'd seen that faked this really nice prismatic lens flare effect when you looked up toward the sun. So that was a detail I really wanted to recreate for this piece. Because priorities.
In middle school, I would draw and cut out my own physical Triple Triad cards to play with after becoming obsessed with #FFVIII. So to contribute some artwork to #mtgxfinalfantasy was a real bucket list item I never really thought I'd be lucky enough to check off. 😊 Many thanks to AD: Eisuke Takeda!
