“You’re alienating half of your audience by being political”

Motherfucker, my “audience” is people who aren’t pieces of shit, who care about others. That’s who I make stuff for.

There is no “other half”.

Remember "Go woke, go broke?"

Even if that was real (which it wasn't), I would rather be broke than racist, fam.

Go woke, be able to sleep at night.

This one always cracks me up because the opposite of woke is "asleep", and these people are so proud to have their eyes closed.

I was asked “how hard core are you about politics?”
Me: idk a bit?
Them: like what about friends and family who are Trump voters?
Me: oh I don’t fuck with them
Them: oh…

It doesn't matter how big the population you are 'alienating'.

The community of your fans is what you cultivate. If there's a moral or action you don't want in your community, you have to voice that and enforce it.

People who say things like that are the ones who think that having pronouns in your bio is a political statement. They will turn literally everything into politics.
And I don't want that in my audience.

The idea that those rightwing chuds are even worth the trouble, as in, they’re not paying shit to support creatives. They want a product and their people just make trash or scam. Fence sitting cowards too, no backbone when it comes to life or death, why expect them to have your back beyond a moment.

I’ve never understood this argument… It’s not even an argument tbh you either have feelings and care or have a dead heart like what is it? It’s coming from a place of privilege… I know some people don’t speak out because of their work settings or aren’t vocal online but they know… I’ve just become

The secret is the people who censure "being political" feel the same way as OP but their audience and people is the racists and they don't want to say it out loud because they get their fee fees hurt when people tell them racism bad

Carrie Underwood and Nicki Minaj showed their true colours and, well… I predict their story ends with bitter entitlement and obscurity… then a comeback attempt that fails spectacularly in their 60's...

I see an Anita Bryant career trajectory for both of them.

Right? And they're so self-centered that they don't consider the wider viewership to be gained by being more inclusive.

And to look at it through a shittier capitalist lens that the naysayers love so much: more inclusive of folks who actually support art with their wallets.

TBH it doesn't take much to be "political" these days. It's a just plain and absolute evil d*ck move to decide peoples mere existence is "political" and then complain when they are "political" (simply by breathing). 🙄

People who say this have no idea how statistics work. 1st, the voting is more 1/3 for each side and then undecided. Of the 33% that did vote for a specific side only a small percentage care enough to change what media they consume. Taking a political stance is alienating 2% max.

Plus. So what if I were alienating half my audience? 1st off maybe that's exactly who needs to hear me be political. 2ndly, there's more to life than appealing to the lowest common denominator. If I lose audience for speaking up, so be it. Being quiet to avoid making a scene is how we got here.

I keep thinking back to that Pixar Disney+ show that was supposed to include a trans character/storyline, and conservatives complained, and the story was cut. Because they sacrificed their artistic integrity and removed something unique, I didn't bother with watching the show at all.
1

By kowtowing to reactionary bullshit, THEY alienated the audience that wanted to see story lines like that. Meanwhile, I have never seen any conservatives talk about how much they loved the show or anything. The conservatives they tried to appease didn't actually care about the show either way.

And even if, by some weird chance, an artist has a more broad audience, there is no audience where those people make up half of anything. They're either a minuscule portion of overall audiences, or they're the audience, and that's a whole different ballgame.

Ideally art should only have one target audience in mind - it's creator. Compromising only for the sake of pleasing the widest audience, and therfore the lowest common denominator, makes it content.

Weirdly they never seem to worry about how many people you alienate by making a community welcoming to hateful, vile bigots.

You can't actually have both. A community welcoming to people who "don't like politics" is inherently unwelcoming to those whose existence they consider to be "politics."

Parents - You can’t just assume they’re a bad person because they’re Republican. Not all Republicans are bad people. You should be more accepting.

Me - Voting based on greed or hate makes them bad people. I’m not the bigot in this scenario. I am not the one driven by greed & hate.
