I talked to numerous people in Newtown. They were surprised to hear Trump condemn Alex Jones for his Sandy Hook denial, because they expressly asked Trump to disavow this in 2017 during his first term and he refused.

When Trump needed the conspiracy-theorizing masses of Alex Jones in his coalition, he was fine with Jones' Sandy Hook denial. Now that Alex Jones has shown disloyalty to *him,* suddenly Trump professes to care about it.

This gets at MAGA's deepest perversities.

I am unconvinced that he now feels anything for the people who endured such unimaginable trauma. He instead feels anger and betrayal because a few of his loudest supporters have called him out on ONE thing (they’re likely OK with his other BS). It still has nothing to do with anyone but Trump.

Trump's only condemning Jones on his Sandy Hook stance now because Jones has turned on Trump for the time being. Trump doesn't care about Sandy Hook, but will say anything if he thinks it's to his advantage.

They shouldn't be so surprised. That Man chose to skate over Jones' lies about Sandy Hook when it was to his political advantage with Jones and his audience to do so. Now that he's apparently definitively broken with Jones, he feels no compunction in doing a 180 on the subject.

Nobody should be surprised FFS. He *always* says whatever is most convenient in the moment. He counts on his base having the collective memory of a goldfish. He's been doing this for at least a decade so why would anyone feign surprise.
