There are far too many cyclists who think that if they're just really good boys and girls on their bike that drivers won't kill them. And that is because they are all victims of an abusive system of car dependency.

How are Mass cyclists enjoying motorists’ assiduous observance of the 4-foot passing LAW lol

A friend asked his local PD if they've ever enforced it and they didn't even reply

I'm not really disagreeing with you but there's another psychological defense going on here as well I think. Those involved in a dangerous activity (I used to whitewater kayak) will very often blame the victims for accidents. It's easier that acknowledging that you can be injured/die at random.

Yeah, although I do think it's all related. "I follow the rules. I do the right thing. It can't happen to me." People think of these as freak accidents instead of the result of dangerous infrastructure and bad drivers.

In the video the guy is in a painted bike lane and the driver doesn't signal.

Right hooks terrify me so much. No amount of skill can defend against them, and you're almost certain to go under, not over, the car.

Yup. A huge risk in lots of places in our town.

I think my brain has subconsciously picked up some stuff that drivers do, but like, it's not perfect, and I couldn't tell you what they are.
It's just moments of it screaming "watch out for that car" built on years of close calls.

what i don't understand about those supposed "cyclists" is how they watch a video where the guy had no time to do anything different and say he should have yielded.

They think they're smarter and safer. I think it's a way of thinking you have agency amid a system that is working against you.

Cars are bigger and yes, I will often defer to them, but that is not an excuse for vehicular violence!

and I definitely don’t defer to them because they have the right of way, I defer because I don’t want to die

A father in my town was just sent to the ICU by a hit and run BMW driver, most likely just going to or from the train station. His bike was dragged for like 500 feet. It's just sociopathic behavior.
