couldn’t play Pokémon at first because it was “satanic”

couldn’t date but then mom cried and asked if I was gay

couldn’t read HP

couldn’t wear most clothes for my age groups

Couldn’t listen to “secular” music for almost a decade

sent to weight watchers at 12 because I was 12lb overweight

Ayyy actually woke up thinking about my strict religious childhood and this is the first post I see 🍻

Church camp was unhinged, looking back. Egregious cult behavior I obviously didn’t recognize at the time.

no extracurricular activities that had events on Sundays, so I had to drop theatre til I could drive myself and quit non-school sponsored dance

no piercings other than loves (jokes on u mom)

no spending the night unless mom knew the parents from church

no camp except church camp

(finally got to theatre camp bc my grandparents paid for it from their VERY small salary and it wasn’t sleepaway)

no Halloween/trick or treat, which I begged to do at 12 because “it’s the last year I could do it”. we all see how I celebrate and love it now.

No movies over PG rating til I was 17

I did not have it this bad but my parents were really weird about Alanis Morrisette and my dad told me “your mother and I have never used the F word” (which was bullshit)

You just reminded me my mom got pissed I was singing along to Lovefool when I was 12-13 because 1) I wasn’t supposed to know it 2) her perceived sexual tones of the song
(I knew it despite being barely sentient when it came out but my grandad played vh1 in the background a lot)

I feel all of that.
My stepdad was strict on bedtime, not eating in the living room and chores.
Then they moved away & I lived with my grandparents, who basically forgot they had a horny teenager living with them.
I was entirely unsupervised after 12.
