New Bird....
This will be my third season monitoring Peregrine Falcon nest sites in southeast Minnesota. This site has had a pair the past 2 years, but this year only a solitary, unbanded young female (assuming from size). I had fun watching her explore the cliff face. She wasn't still much at all.

I followed a large group of Pelicans to see where they landed. A small lake about 5 miles away was their destination. Two groups of about 30 birds each started zig-zagging across the lake getting slowly closer. Eventually they were around 50 feet from me.

To everyone in Minnesota and other areas of the cold Northland.

We'll soon be at this stage. Just hang on a little longer.
We don't need to celebrate a man on a stick to celebrate the true season of rebirth and renewal.

Tundra Swans....
I was out planting more native trees on our lot and had the beautiful sounds of many species of birds.
Best of all were the calls from Tundra Swans as they fly up the Mississippi Flyway to their nesting territories way up north.
This pair seemed to lose each other temporarily.

The last of the ice drifted down the Mississippi this weekend and the remaining Bald eagles took advantage of an easy meal as they pick fish from the thaw.
The chilly wind coming straight down the valley made for some easy shots as the birds rode the breeze.

Shadow Of The Killer....

Whilst tracking a fast moving Peregrine yesterday, my autofocus lost the bird and hit on the rock face it was flying to. It was not until I downloaded 300 shots that I saw that I'd captured the shadow of the falcon as she was coming in to perch.

This beautiful falcon is actually an education ambassador for a Peregrine Falcon project here in Minnesota. I always love to see her and moreso to have her grace my glove for a few hours during an education program.

A slo-mo video of Angel, a 26 year old, permanently injured, female Bald eagle at the National Eagle Center in Minnesota.

Preening and showing the flexibility that 14 cervical vertebrae have over the 7 that humans and most mammals have.

Further to my last, spring migration, post. This video is from the autumn migration as the birds move downriver with their young. Far too cold for the Pelicans in Minnesota.

The advantage of living in the Mississippi Flyway migration route, is that I get to see migratory birds in their hundreds, sometimes more. This particular day, there must have been 800+ American White Pelicans stopping off to feed on their journey north to nest sites.

I'm not sure about 'married' for wild creatures, but I wouldn't want to have to prove myself to my much larger mate just to get a little action in the way a Peregrine Falcon tiercel has to. 😁

First round of clearing done. Another one later this evening, so we have a chance at getting the cars out. Of course, if the plough doesn't come through...... 😬

Post from our local area Facebook group this morning. 🤣
60+ mph winds overnight. Calmed to 40+ mph now.

12+ inches of snow due this weekend. More in the north of the state.

Gotta love Minnesota!

A bloody wild night with wind sounding like it was going to take the roof off. Lots of wet snow right now that is sliding down the windows and collecting at the bottom.
Temp is now dropping below freezing, so we might have literally frosted glass to look out of today. 😁

They're Back ..

Driving back into the Mississippi valley, from a few unsuccessful hours Peregrine spotting, and noticed over a dozen Turkey Vultures riding the increasing winds.
A bit shaky as it's hand held at 600mm.
