So, today I'm announcing a new book project... and doing a call for papers: crpgbook.wordpress.com/2025/10/31/the-video-game-history-expansion-pack-pitch-your-story/

It's an anthology of video game history outside the usual US perspective - an accessible & exciting panorama of different realities - and I'll pay 300 USD per article.

Please share :)

This is exactly the kind of thing I WOULD LOVE TO READ. Can you please set up a way to register for mailing lists so that we can stay updated on this project?

The CRPG Book site has a "subscribe for updates" button on the right side:
crpgbook.wordpress.com/

I'll probably make a new site for the new book later, but for now this will keep you updated :)

I saw this and wanted to contribute, I am just a little stumped on which article would work. I will think about it.

Hola Felipe! I actually wrote an article about Paraguay as a piracy hub for Dread Central back in the day: www.dreadcentral.com/editorials/478610/hispanics-in-games-general-stroessner-dictatorship-and-third-world-country-bootlegging-2/

I had a column dedicated to Hispanic in Games.

I'd love to contribute the Paraguay article (in fuller form).

Where do I submit? How do I get in cotact?

Hola Marcos, I wrote my email in the post linked in the tweet above. And thank you for the article, but it's missing the Taiwan connection with Paraguay, which I think is really important in this case.

I would love it if someone wrote a good article about how pirate NES games came to Brazil. Warpzone's "Definitivo Clones" talks a bit about it, but I wanted to learn more specially about those smaller companies such as Conector that went the extra mile and even translated some games to Portuguese

I'd love to share my perspective coming from the Arab world.

This is absolutely exciting. I grew up in Yucatán (ans in México city, I suppuse) and, growing up, seeing certain differences between the experiences I had compared to the anglocentrist internet consensus has always surprised me a bit. Not always in a good way.

You want me to share it or to write about the Spain demoscene? 😁

Would the American Arcade scene count as “outside the usual US perspective” - because GAMING HISTORY™️ tends to mean Console History

I think a book about non-regional, non-mainstream subcultures in gaming (roguelike communities, Flash games, shareware, pre-2010 independent games, etc.) could be fascinating.

Sorry, but I really want to avoid the US. Even if it's niche, there's still more literature about US arcades than about entire continents...

Not quite an article but I have an ol' long-sleeved shirt that was part of the SEGA World Sydney staff uniform I could take pics of or some such.

Would you be interested in something about the UK arcade scene that continued on mainly thanks to every seaside town still having arcades to this day.

Sorry, but I really want to focus more on the global south.

Good luck with the project, I may pitch an article…

Love this. Even though I'm in North America (Canada), the writing on games is so US-focused it drives me wild. Can't wait to see the final book!

I'm sure you're already familiar with Marcus Garret's books and documentaries, right?

One is about the origin of video games in Brazil (with the documentary available for free on YouTube), and the other is about computers (& our situation with the market reserve, local clones, etc).

Hi these sound great, could you provide more information?

Yup, I own the books :D But I want to make something that is broader than "this what happened in country X".

There's a lot of things we have in common with many other countries we can write about, like having Paraguay as a hub for piracy, or Bomba Patch across all of Latin America :)

I've been meaning to write about two regional TV shows we had where I live that were both fully dedicated to gaming coverage since the early 90's. Both had a huge follow but sadly we don't have much online material. Although I don't know if that is the focus of the book.

not quite a pitch but we published some similar stuff a while ago including some writing on Brazil's locadoras and mod scene:

I don't know if either of these writers is still working but if you find these interesting I can see if I can dig up emails to ask them if they'd wanna work with you

This looks like a great project! Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.

Just curious: the post uses "US" and "North America" interchangeably. Are pitches specifically for non-US or non-North America history? Is English Canada or French Canada in/out of scope?

Do you know if there's much about the early French Canadian video game industry out there?

Also, she's not Canadian, but I thought it was cool to find out about Muriel Tramis, who was born in Martinique before moving to France as an adult and developing video games. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel_Tramis

I'm focusing on things outside North America. Even if Canada is a different country, there's a lot of overlap, especially when compared with the rest of the world :)

this is very exciting, do you have a timeframe in mind?

For submitting a pitch? It depends on how long it takes for me to find 10 pitches, I expect it should take at least 2-4 weeks.

The article itself can take months, this will probably take me all of 2026.

I think it would be nice to track some key people and see if they're up for an article themselves, like the crew at Tec Toy or Allan Jefferson from Bomba Patch.

Nice one, good luck with this, can’t wait to read it :)

I covered a few things like this in Curious Video Game Machines - Korea, bootleg consoles, Brazilian SEGA consoles, etc - but there are loads more stories out there…

Wrote about Sweden’s first commercial studio that developed games on Videopac in the early 80’s. A lot of Philips connections. Story today is mostly the US Odyssey 2 perspective but Videpac was big elsewhere. Maybe something for a Dutch person closer to Philips, but otherwise I can contribute.

I don't know if, for this project, you want other points than brazilian ones, BUT it would be awesome to read through Brazil videogame history.

I'll suggest this article, it's short but talks about a lot of what the average Brazilian experienced in the 90s & 00s: deorbital.media/why-videogame-mods-were-and-still-are-the-greatest-feat-in-brazils-gaming-history-c3a8667b90a

Thanks, this is interesting but isn't it exactly what I'm looking for. Focusing on official game releases was one of the biggest mistakes authors made in analyzing game history in Brazil, it wasn't at all representative of how most people actually play and interact with games :)

I've written a book about the history of #SEGA in which I REALLY tried to push the outside US narrative of the company. Europe, Australia, Brazil and more are covered. Would love it if you took a look!

I would love to pitch something from Mexico but despite living here my entire life, my knowledge of a lot of regional things is quite poor. :(

Not your fault, this is exactly why I want to do this project - it's easier to learn about US history than our own.
