"arcade games are just made to steal your quarters" is like some "contemporary art is just money laundering" type shit. dispense with these layer-two takes you heard from someone marginally smarter than you. play out run. get your cock out and play xevious. play mr. do!

If someone's making this argument not to go to an actual arcade: That's what walking in with a pre-set amount of cash and not your credit card is for
If someone's making this argument not to play at home: That's What Free Play Is For

Thing is, this is an argument used against how they handle difficulty in any context. Being able to infinitely credit-feed unfortunately makes it harder for some people to see the value of replaying the game to get better.

Thing is yeah? Kinda?? They sorta are? But it doesn't change the fact artists who knew mathematics and programming put actual effort into making that art regardless of the fact it is a mode of transaction (you pay for the experience you get, hopefully it's an equivalent one). Play them anyway.

not the point but theres a massive delta in the amount of quarters arcade games want from you. i noticed the 90s kicked it up a notch. supposedly a lot of arcade goers got too skilled and hogged the machine on one credit.

my dad and his generation mostly cite dragons lair

I think its true for some arcade games but arcade games arent uniquely bad under capitalism. Like console games waste your time because of money related stuff

What a scam! Imagine spending $10 on a day out to play a smorgasbord of the most beautiful and exciting video games available, with your cock out

Dude, the machines last I checked were $1 a play. $10 is thirty minutes.

It’s similar to β€œcinemas make all their money from concessions stands, don’t buy food there.” Well, yeah, most of the ticket price goes to the studios, distributors, etc. Pipers need paid because pipers need to eat.

God, I miss regular game arcades
I live in Poland and all "arcades" I've seen in recent years were just reward-ticket dispensing gambling joints
As far as I understand this is because arcade games started getting legislated AS gambling machines and they stopped being a viable business

I mean, they kinda were. They were made to be deliberately hard to get players to spend more money and, unless you had the money to spend and a lot of time it was hard to get good at them.

I don't know about y'all but I only set foot into an arcade maybe twice a year.

This is a bad comparison. The relationship between the art market and money laundering is well documented. You are the direct beneficiary in fun terms of your quarter invested however!
