Weird to me that this is the thing everyone cites, because there's so much that's so much worse. In 1974 the first laws against marital rape were passed, but all 50 states did not classify it as a crime/remove the exemption until 1993.

OK - it's Friday night. I have beer. And, better yet, I have about half a bottle of Yuzumon left.

And it's Merrie Monarch time - Hulu Kahiko night. (Hulu Kahiko is pre-1894 hula; modern hula is its own category in the competition.

If you want to watch, livestream below.

"How do you sustain interest built up by something like the Artemis II stuff?"

If you figure this out, do let us deep sea folks know, bc honestly we have THE MOST live & interactive science available rn and STILL very little of the public cares at all. If cool ocean shit can't win ppl, idk what can

Our mission, Psyche, has a Mars flyby coming up in about a month. It's been pretty darned cool this week listening to the Artemis II ops comms while working on the encounter sequence. Things got even cooler when I saw some Moon flyby pics had Mars in them and realized our own bird was in frame too.

This is true of painters too. Basically any skilled worker (carpenter, tile guy, etc) owns their own tools, and getting one’s truck stolen with all one’s tools in it is a common way these workers are ground into debt

watched the splash down with ma figghia and nonna tonight.

Nonna: the boats keep going by, they don't see them.
Me: They know what they're doing. They're just circling.
Ma figghia: Where are they?
Me: They'll be out soon.
Nonna: Oh, they missed them again.
Me: Eh...
Ma figghia: That was nice, huh?

Big historical footnote: The Navy amphibious vessel recovering the Artemis crew this evening is named for John Murtha, the first Vietnam vet in Congress, who ultimately opposed the Iraq war and sought accountability for U.S. war crimes fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/navy-supports-nasa-artemis-mission/

I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.

I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee

Look, sorting your gummy bears by color is the way Adonai intended them to be eaten. It’s in the Talmud.

This is me. Nobody *really* needs to hear “I hope this message finds you well,” do they? Isn’t it more efficient to go straight to “can you please send me the PDF of your paper”?

A good friend of mine works at NASA, and has spent the last TEN years of his life working on the Orion CPAS (Capsule Parachute Assembly System), testing it in the deserts of Arizona.

Ten years of design & testing. For this moment.

Science is so good, y'all.

here are the 4 guys who went into the capsule to check out the astronauts, in case anyone needs any more competence porn

They're using the John P. Murtha for recovery, because the ship has a floodable well deck (aka *moon pool*) they can use to retrieve the capsule

Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school.

Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon!

Space engineering is really conservative, in part because we spent a lot of resources testing Apollo tech to Hell and back. We can prolly make better tech but NASA has not been alotted sufficient resources to test much stuff as well as Apollo stuff was tested. NASA sticks with what’s proven.
