I've been handed food that's already expired. They don't think poor people deserve to have good food. When I was on the street, a woman handed me the rest of her sandwich with big bites taken out of it, and her and her husband tried to make me feel bad for criticizing them.

You are absolutely right. I participate in a local food charity event that sets up a shopping plaza in a community center. Folks who need food show up with carts, bags, etc. And then they go shopping, just like regular folks. They get to pick and choose from fresh fruits, veggies, and other foods.

It restores dignity, a little bit, to offer people choices. They pay nothing. But they leave with food they chose for themselves, not leftovers or a bag of random pantry goods.

Some dry goods are essential, but access to fresh, nutritious food is vital.

I'm used to food/food deprivation being used as a punishment. I grew up in a household of animal hoarders where I was forced to clean up all the crates from the dogs and cats that my step parents kept. I was denied dinner if I didn't complete my chores by 9:00. They even locked the fridge.

Dude, I’m really sorry. I’m trying to think of something else to say but that’s it—you didn’t deserve to be treated this way.

So have I! Back when we relied on food shelters in st paul . We even knew folks who dumpster dived to feed ppl . They had good intent but food would rot in a day.

College mysteriously "got rid" of all records when I called to get documentation for ongoing health problems. And now ppl just laugh at me and go "that's just the kissing disease" meanwhile all my disabled mutuals post about Epson barr.

That’s so fucked up. That’s why I feel giving people money is the best option—let them get nonexpired food they can enjoy. Giving food seems bizarre —for reasons you stated but also people have allergies and preferences.
