An excellent reminder for when we talk about modern car safety.

The driver in the Jeep (yes, that was a Jeep) was hospitalized in serious condition, but lived, has been released, and should make a full recovery.

That’s modern safety engineering at work.

And why so many of Tesla‘s unforced errors around safety and the ability to leave the car aren’t just foibles, they’re serious departures from generations of learned experience, and often violations of safety regulations.

We had a family friend who got in a crash in his early 20s in the 50s. He was conscious and could hear the EMTs saying “this one looks dead.” His leg never healed. What we have achieved is amazing.

Automobile safety has gone to incredible lengths in the last decade or so. This is obviously exceptional but the crew compartments are so resilient now. My local fire department very rarely uses the jaws of life anymore.

(The jeep driver was very lucky the semi tractor was not carrying a trailer, but bare tractors start at 15,000 pounds and go up to 25K, so at least a good 3 times the Jeep’s mass at the low end.)

The only real gripe I have about modern car safety is that the laws are written to require certain technologies, not to require a certain protection level. I would love to see a fully passive safety system equivalent to airbags. All structure, no electronics or squibs.

That said, I won't buy a vehicle without them!

Holy Crap! The driver of the cheap must have had someone or something looking out for him! I never believed in miracles, but this may just be one!

A miracle of technology and regulation. Humans made this miracle with thought and care and empathy.
