It's nice when newspapers use photos of normal every-day people riding bicycles as "just a normal thing to do".
it normalizes the idea that cycling is something anyone can do, for transportation, for getting around the city without the financial (& emotional!) cost of driving a car).

When stationed in Augsburg, Germany in the 1980’s a friend asked me my first impressions1) there were beautiful flower boxes on most windows, 2) old people rode bicycles everywhere with their baskets for groceries 3) there were delicious wines cheap! & 4) every neighborhood had recycling bins!

You know what doesn't help? Elitist cyclists wearing the full spandex kit, bragging about their $200 pedals and $2,000 handlebars, calling folks who commute in cars "cagers" and talking about how they keep their bike chain and locks within reach so they can hit cars with them.

That DOESN'T help.

It's such a weird mental place to go to, when someone mentions a bicycle. Jeffrey Dahmer surely drove a car once, that doesn't mean all drivers eats human flesh every time they get the chance. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well I am one of those “elitest”cyclists that were full spandex kit. My bikes are expensive. But I would never even consider hitting someone’s car with a bike lock and chain.
Mostly cause I’m a bit of a weight weenie and I wouldn’t have them on my bike in the first place!😁

This is such bullshit. I could direct you to an any number of LA YT channels of bike riders who ride at partypace , are community minded & inclusive & diverse & want everyone to join them riding. 101: everything you see isn’t everything there is to know.

I'm curious what the emotional cost of driving a car is.

Traffic, road rage, the mental load of being a responsible driver.

Not everyone is able to ride a bike.

But I do love the idea of fewer cars on the streets 💚

I would need a basket on my bike to but bags and a place to lock bike when inside a store.

People are quick to lift bikes and drive off with them.

Not enough places to lock up a bike are a massive factor and often overlooked in the discussion about infrastructure. Most car parks can afford the space for a small bike rack at least if not a proper bike shelter.

But most bikes can be fitted with baskets or panniers which is good

It's good but I feel like it still puts the burden for an alternative to cars on the public.

"buy a bike because we're not going to adequately fund public transit."

I don’t drive. Never have. Ride a bike daily. Use public transport daily. Often combine local train & bike together. Build cities that make combined journeys feasible for everyone. Including cargo bikes, tricycles & recumbents. 🚲💚

I decided to "be the change" in 1990, so I've been commuting & living my life on bikes since then, only briefly "owned" my Mother's car (short term memory loss ended her driving!).

Ridden a distance equal to the moon by now.

Predictably thrown away for STANDING UP!

BICYCLES DON'T NEED MOTORS!
