had to make this games industry compilation after hearing digital foundry's really bad response to the dlss 5 backlash

That's not really contradictory: I bet nvidia consulted with studio executives beforehand and they gave an "ok" after consulting with legal, without even thinking about checking on their devs. Nvidia can say it's "studio approved", DF guys mistake it for "dev approved" and we're all slopped for life

I'm honestly more worried about the general promotion they comstantly do of Howart's Legacy than anything else I've seen from them, particularly from Alex and Jonh (Oliver does seem to have a weird AI fixation I don't enjoy at all, but oh well what can I do)

This feels like a case of "studio" versus "devs"... wherein the studio's higher up, not-really-working-on-shit-but-overseeing-things employees are saying "Yeah, DLSS is cool," or whatever... while the *actual* devs are like "Dude, what the fuck?"

THE FACT THAT CAPCOM had to come out like

"errrr please dont touch our games like this ever again"

As if they weren't based enough already...

Oh I'm sure someone at Capcom who doesn't touch development directly gave them the "ok" for a sum of money.

I tossed them to the side in 2019. It's been a while and I don't remember exactly why, but it had to do with Nvidia's Quake 2 RTX work. Being very experienced in that field at the time, it was clear they were reading Nvidia marketing copy directly with little to no objectivity.

Q2RTX was more of a raytracing thing than it was Upscaling, was it not?

It’s insane how much worse it makes Oblivion look, it washes out the lighting so bad

I still can't believe their follow-up was "We should have led with the environmental lighting changes".

Which ALSO looks like dogshit

really curious how in the future, games will be “created” by CEOs alone, using only AI and creative prompts

“make me a GTA but with space ships and all the characters are sexy animals”

I’m sure DF were told that, it’s just whoever told them absolutely lied (or was talking exclusively to suits, not devs, from Capcom and Ubisoft)

Pretty strong sentiments against against the "We take over your creative work and kill it's art style"-Filter.

Nvidia better do real good on coming dev integration and control of this.

I mean, DF is not into games really, their into computer graphics, so I am not surprised they don't consider / respect the artistic vision.

Not all that shocked to see. Digital Foundry has never been an art-first channel, its a tech circlejerk where specular lighting and bounce based pore rending makes their dicks hard. No wonder they are in love with DLSS5 and AI slop.

Not all the people who work there are like that. That's why people were also pretty disappointed, because we know for a fact that some of them will not tolerate that shit. Btw, some of them discovered the video like us. DF Retro is still, as of today, one of the best shows about games.

I'm not gonna fault digital foundry for being into eye candy graphical stuff...I literally bought a new video card when Doom 3 came out back in the day just to be able to play it on higher settings. Same with Crysis.

I love eye candy as well but only when it complements the art, not replaces it

Honestly, this falloff was signposted very heavily. Digital Foundry has long been touting the "advances" of DLSS and other slop bandaids devs slap on poorly or not-at-all-optimised games for quite a while.
Still disappointing but nobody can say this came out of nowhere.

good on Alex for bringing up exactly this point regarding the actual devs probably not having good feelings about this, but man it's disappointing to see the other two dudes make excuses for it.

This is Richard's response. You should probably post what Alex Battaglia said.

I mean, Alex (and John) was also silent about them doing five videos for the TERF Game, so forgive me if I could care less what he has to say

this is how they chose to open the video, i didn't choose to include the parts where they're derisively laughing at the concept of artistic integrity

I love how the two of them are trying to justify their reactions from the original video and trying to get Alex to agree while Alex is just sitting there standing his ground and is just like, "no, this ain't it guys."

The part I found most funny is they pretended like these companies were on board with it, as if they had all their artists of those games agreeing.
The CEO's, marketing leads and chairmans who are completely dettached from art allowing it? I believe it.
The artists that actually made it all? BS.

They make that point in the video:
"Just because producers, game owners, and publishers sign off on something doesn't mean the entire team was on board, specifically the artist team who created the character models or environments... this does in some ways trample on vision in a very hardcore way."

Here’s hoping people bully them by unsubscribing to their shit stain of a channel and new site.

Always makes me happy when channels I never liked get roasted.

They should go back to talking about CRTs and how they are still great for modern games.

The response from Richard and Oliver was so bad... Like, we shrugged the nonsense off our shoulders, nothing to see here. Only Alex was responding the way everyone should have responded.

I know there's probably a single digit percent chance that the outrage changes anything, but it gives me a small piece of hope that people will resist this AI bullshit

and tbh a small piece of hope is good enough in these times
