A compass is a curious metaphor, b/c unless it points exactly between two directions, it points closer to one than the other, making it more applicable to lesser evil voters. The relevant metaphor for abstainers is... deciding this camping trip sucks and you're just gonna stay in your tent and pout.

actually the compass points to literally infinite different directions! north and south aren’t the only two that you have to choose between once it stops spinning!
