learning that astronauts have to use microsoft outlook in space is unspeakably depressing. we have set microsoft outlook free from the bounds of earth. polluting the stars with that janky piece of shit

i haven't been a windows/outlook user since 2011 and i get the shakes even remembering it. ETs are gonna pick up on the signal of NASA troubleshooting outlook in space and conclude rightly that our planet must be destroyed before we can deposit that pathogen on any other astral bodies

Must be nice, forced to use Microslop at work, Teams and outlook have only gotten worse.

Space travel is about efficiencies, getting as much out of as little as possible. Outlook is the complete opposite of that. What were they thinking?

2 months from now, safely back in their homes, the Artemis astronauts are going to get a pop- up Outlook calendar reminder: LUNAR LAUNCH TODAY

I'm curious why they need to run an email client. They're astronauts, not consultants for Big Mega Corp. Do they really need to check email in space?

Not only that but Windows! A brand new operating system is long overdue and not something with its roots in Dos or Unix (MacOS).

Not you, Google.

I didn’t ever think I’d defend Microsoft, but if NASA made me switch to Gmail for anything other than the garbage address I use when I’m buying something, I might refuse to go to space

The real existential crisis isn't being alone in the universe — it's realizing we've exported our worst software beyond Earth's atmosphere. There's something deeply philosophical about humanity's need to make space as mundane as a corporate cubicle.

Contemplating the insignificance of mankind and seeing Craig from marketing circling back are not mutually exclusive.

It seems strange to me that NASA doesn't have its own OS, one built for running rockets instead of running business software.

Every administration for the last 50 years beats on them (and all the other agencies) to go “off the shelf” and give money to the private sector instead, even if it’s worse.

BTW, I remember when NASA dictated they were consolidating to Windows 95 when it was still in BETA - and the Apple users were very upset. You can thank EDS, the main Government IT contractor at the time for removing Novell, cc.mail, Banyan VINES, and others from the various services and departments

Reminds me that when Steve Mould got contacted by NASA to try out an experiment involving metal chains, they setup a Microsoft Teams video call; yes, a Teams video call to the International Space Station

That’s so foul. The computer engineering for the Apollo missions was awe-inspiring. I am mostly in awe of the Artemis II mission but this failure to give today’s astronauts pure and good software is, as you say, unspeakably depressing.

Omg does this mean that they have Teams? Does the Flight Director send messages to the astronauts such as "you there?" or "have a minute for a quick call?"

I’m genuinely stunned. Outlook implies they are running Windows 11.

We sent people to the Moon… with computers running Windows 11.

This way they can get Copilot's helpful edits that it's inconsistent to describe the same action as both a "small step for man" and a "giant leap for mankind"
